Diabetes To Have Matchups For Clinical Trials

For decades, diabetes has affected millions of people in the UK as well as around the world. There has been no cure yet for the disease but there is a new scheme that people think might pave the way to finding it. A drive for massive recruitment is going on to be able to match up research projects and thousands of patients that have diabetes to do this. This is being considered as some kind of a “dating agency” because of its concept of letting both the researchers and patients a chance to come in contact.

The problem with the current situation is only 1% of patients with diabetes would join clinical trials for the disease, unlike the 30% of the cancer patients that would join trials for cancer. This doesn’t sound good for the 2.8 million people that are found to have diabetes in the UK. About 800,000 more may already have the disease but do not know it according to the charity Diabetes UK. One of the main problems why it is hard for researchers to match up with diabetic patients is that would mostly just go for General Practitioners than specialists to get diagnosed.

But now with the new “dating” scheme, there are three selected regions in England that have been granted as pilot subjects for the plan and it would allow 25,000 patients to be part of clinical trials, matter what type of diabetes they have that would be compatible to the researchers they match with. The three regions are north-east London and the south-west and north-west of England. As we know, diabetes has still no cure. The main reason as to why these clinical trials are needed is to find much better treatments or even that elusive cure that we have been looking for the disease. This would also boost awareness for the people regarding it.

Back in caveman days, stress occurred on occasion and was literally a matter of life and death. The body was challenged, responded physically and was then given time to rest and recover. Today, stress has become a part of everyday life and we are in chronic states of “alert” so much of the time, we have come to think of this condition as normal. Stress has become our constant companion.

When we suffer from chronic stress by worrying about a sick family member or losing a job, stress hormones are produced in high levels over long periods of time and they start to exhaust the body’s resources to deal with it. Stress then becomes a form of body pollution.

Almost all of us are exposed to a huge dose of body pollution every day from a number of sources like the emotional situation at work, the air we breathe, the toxins and preservatives in the fired food we eat and the dicey situation on the home front. If one thinks that these things does not affect your health and well-being, you‘ve got to be kidding yourself.

When you consider that people go though similar experience on a daily basis, you can only marvel at the resilience of the human body. By significantly reducing the stress in your life, you will harness energy that can be expended in much more positive ways. Stress is a form of body pollution much like other toxins and while it can’t be avoided entirely, you need to be aware of the negative effects and deal with them.

Mental stress, or simply the negative thoughts we all have from time to time, is also a kind of body pollution. Perhaps we should call it mind pollution. Fuelled by media reports of the latest disaster, mind pollution can become the context for your life if you are not careful. Be aware of your current status and be free from body pollution.

First in the list is the use of mind-numbing drugs, such as alcohol, which obviously affect one’s power of self-control. No wonder those under the influence of drugs and alcohol lose their inhibitions and worse, they become prone to committing crimes. Fatigue can also cause us to act in ways we would not ordinarily think acceptable. The most notorious of all is emotional stress, which stems from the strife, tension, resentment and bitterness created by our competitive way of life and the pressures of modern society. If you have type A personality, then you are more vulnerable to having emotional stress.

People with type A personality are generally time conscious, highly competitive and goal-oriented. They always have to be on the move. They have “hurry-sickness.” An experiment was conducted where intense personalities (type A) were compared with the more laid back (type B) personalities. While they were allowed to work, both groups had similar stress-hormone levels, heart rates and “self-reported discomfort.” However, when they were forced to rest, type A persons, in comparison with the other group, had high levels of adrenaline and cortisol, higher heart rates, and reported having twice the feeling of discomfort as those with type B personalities. In short, they found rest to be stressful. Factoring stress, type A behavior has been associated with coronary heart disease in many scientific studies. Thus, having type A personality has been proven to lead to serious physical disease, seeds of which are all born from the mind.
